Renting a car can be tricky business if you just believe what you see and hear and don't question.
The rates for the same make and model of car can change dramatically from one rental agency to the other, so it's important to ask all the right questions to make sure you are getting the best deal possible.
Make sure you get a set rate and that you KNOW for sure up front what the end result variables are. If you ask, you can usually get a flat rate and get the totals tabulated up front, and in writing.
In reality, once you leave the rental agency with your rental car, the only variables possible should be the milage, and possibly the fuel. And even those are avoidable if you ask about the plans available and choose the right ones.
If you plan to do a lot of driving, choose the unlimited mileage plan.
Most rental agencies today allow you to fill up the car with fuel, before you bring it back, but will fill it for you if you prefer. But you should be aware that if you let them fill it, you will pay an EXORBITANT price per gallon for the fuel.
Also, make REAL sure you go over the car with a fine tooth comb before you leave their lot with it. If the car has any dents or scratches on it, you NEED to make sure you point them out and get them documented before you accept the car. Otherwise, you might just find yourself liable for the damage the LAST guy did. And insurance or no, it could cost you dearly.
These are just some of the ways they can get in your pockets. And if you do not do your due diligence, they will!
So always be sure to find out up front what the charges are going to be. And be sure to get them in writing, so you know exactly what you're dealing with.
The major, reputable Car Rental agencies are NOT rip off artists. But they WILL take you for whatever they legally (and to them Morally) can.
A little forethought can save you a small fortune. So think ahead and enjoy your vacation....
